Robert Keßler Group

„It is about electrifying, tight music. Kessler and the group are like a squad of hugh-jumpers that are hitting the 2, 70m-mark and land without any injuries. This band is a steaming laboratory, inevitably pressing their heat into the listeners’ guts and brains, (…) a vibrating, powerful ensemble, an organism …. Music, you wouldn’t want to miss!“
(Jazzpodium, Feb 2008)

„Highly promising and very much worth listening. On this band’s album it is truly revealed what young German musicians are capable of.“ (Archtop Germany, Dec 2008)

„Kessler’s debut is a thunderbolt“ (Andreas Schmitz, Dec 2008)

„A brilliant instrumentralist … shining with well-measured solos, with thrilling compositions and evenly matched themes …, great album.“ (Gitarre und Bass, Jul 2009)

The Berlin guitarist Robert Kessler started the Robert Kessler Group in 2006, by then performing under the name of „Goya“. With various concerts they were touring Germany and Europe. In 2008 Kessler released his debut album „Jasmin“ that was highly acclaimed by the press and was nominated Archtop Germany’s „CD of the year 2008“. IT is not easy to stylistically pidgeonhole Kessler’s music. Always hunting for new sounds and impressions, his compositions go way beyond the common genre boundaries. Inspired by the music of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny and Maria Schneider he as well got influenced by other cultural backgrounds , first of all Brazilian and Andalusian music. Great flamenco artists, such as Paco de Lucia, Cameron de la Isla, Vicente Amigo or Gerado Nunez were highly influential on Kessler. Furthermore, rock and pop musicians like Sting, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler played an important role in his musical life. From all these influences Robert Kessler developed his independent musical voice. Contemporary jazz mingles with world music and pop. Kessler tells stories, illustrates moods and creates beautiful images. Without limiting the room for interaction and improvisation and without missing moments of virtuosity the compositions’ musical flow and the band’s well-balanced sound are in the centre. On his harmonic and rhythmic tours and detours strong and expressive melodies are important for Kessler. „I like melodies that are easy to sing and when some harmonies shift back and forth beneath those lines.“ Although his music is dense and complex it still stays transparent and tangible and never gets arbitrary at any point. With Tanja Pannier (voc), Matti Klein (p), David Hagen (b), Matthias Kawalek (dr) and Andreas Weiser (perc) Kessler can be proud of a band that captivates the audience with enourmeous passion, energy, interaction, spontaneity and improvisation skills.
