Born in 1984 Kessler grew up in Berlin and started playing the classical guitar at the age of 11. After his A-levels he studied jazz guitar at the Conservatory of Music „Hanns Eisler“ and at the “Berlin Jazz Institute”. His teachers were Manfred Dierkes, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Frank Moebius, Hubert Nuss, Claudia Hein, Sigi Busch, Jiggs Whigham, Gerd Miegel, Jeanfrancois Prins and John Hollenbeck. He was participating in workshops with Mark Whitfield, Aaron Goldberg, Marc Dressler, Chris Potter and Hank Jones. He intensively studied classical guitar literature, flamenco, Brazilian and acoustic guitar music.

In 2006 he started the Robert Kessler Group. Next to the Spell and String, Klezmeyers, Oscars Delight and La Voz Y La Guitarra, the Robert Kessler Group builds the focus of his musical and compository work. In 2008 he released his debut album „Jasmin“ being nominated „album of the year“ by Archtop Germany.

Besides his work as a bandleader and composer he is a very demanded live and session guitar player, being involved in CD productions and concert tours through Germany and Europe. He is playing with Jocelyn B. Smith, Elen Wendt, Christian Meyers Nachtcafé, Vocal Invitation, Lili Dahab, Dietrich Koch Big Band, Berlin Big Band, Cafe du Jazz, Son Madol, Mantigo …

He is the principal guitarist in the Theater des Westens in Berlin for the musical production Mamma Mia. Since 2011 he is playing the Udo Lindenberg Musical Hinterm Horizont, Chicago, Tanz der Vampire und Ich war noch niemals in New York. From 2007 to 2009 he was a guitarist with the musical and theatre productions ‚Musicalfieber’, ‚Dancical’ and ‚Diskomania’. In 2009/10 he was guitarist, deputy MD and casting conductor of the musical production ‚Musicalfieber’.

Since 2010 he has a teaching assignment for guitar and ensemble at the Berlin College of popular Arts (hdpk), Jazzinstitut Berlin- Bach Gymnasium and University of music “Hanns Eisler” Berlin.

He is doing Guitar and Jazzworkshops and is the guitar coach for Telekom Music Talent Space
